Services to Children & Youth

The hospital serves a geographic area with a population of 264,000 people, of which 40% are under 18 years of age. On average, 12,000 children and youth seek care at Nazareth Hospital pediatrics department each year, including children from the West Bank.

With 18 beds, a dedicated team, and very limited space, Nazareth Hospital’s pediatrics department offers general pediatrics, surgery, orthopedics, urology, plastic surgery, and gynecology, as well as community health education and outreach.

However, the department is in need of upgrading. The plan includes renovations, equipment and staff development. We are working with our Nazareth Partners to raise funds toward new equipment.

As seed money, hospital staff collected funds and a hospital board member, Peter Turnpenny, MD, did a bike ride through his native Great Britain. Dr. Peter Turnpenny was a pediatrician at Nazareth Hospital for seven years (1983 to 1990) and today is a renowned clinical geneticist in Exeter. As a fundraiser for this project, Turnpenny cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats, the length of his native Great Britain (875 miles). He did this in celebration of his 60th birthday.

“Take Me to the English Hospital!”

This 12-year old boy almost lost his leg in an accident. In the ambulance, he shouted, “Take me to the English Hospital!” (Nazareth Hospital)

During his 45 days at the hospital, he filled the walls next to his bed with stories and pictures he created while recovering.  As a parting gift, his nurses gave him a pillow with his picture on it.
